TikTok Ads in 2026: A Field Guide From Live Accounts
TikTok rewards brands that behave like creators and punishes brands that behave like advertisers. This guide is what we walk new clients through before their first campaign goes live, based on accounts we manage right now.

Key takeaways
- TikTok ads work best when they look like TikTok content: vertical, fast, human and made for sound on. Polished TV-style ads usually get scrolled past.
- Creative is the main targeting lever. Broad audiences with strong, varied creative tend to beat narrow interest targeting on the accounts we run.
- Spark Ads, which boost real posts from your account or creators, often deliver cheaper engagement and more trust than standard in-feed ads.
- Set up the TikTok pixel and Events API before spending, and judge results on your own store or CRM data, not just in-platform numbers.
- Plan for creative volume. Most accounts need several new videos every week to keep costs stable once they scale.
01Why TikTok ads deserve a place in your plan
A few years ago, most brands treated TikTok as an experiment for younger audiences. That has changed. We now run TikTok campaigns for skincare brands, fashion labels, local service businesses, apps and even a few B2B companies with young buyers. It is not right for every business, but it has earned a proper look.
What makes it different from Meta or YouTube is the way people use it. TikTok’s feed is driven almost entirely by recommendations rather than who you follow, so a good ad from an unknown brand can reach a lot of people quickly. The flip side is that a bad ad gets ignored even faster. There is very little loyalty to a format that does not entertain or inform in the first two seconds.
In media plans we write, TikTok usually sits in the demand-creation slot alongside Meta. It is rarely the channel that closes the sale on its own, but it is often the channel that introduces the brand to people who later search for it or click a retargeting ad. That is why we judge it on blended results, which we come back to later.
02How TikTok Ads Manager is structured
The account structure looks familiar if you have run Meta ads. There are three levels, and getting them right early saves a lot of confusion later.
| Level | What you set here | Our usual approach |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Objective and, optionally, campaign budget | One campaign per objective, with campaign budget optimisation on once there are several ad groups |
| Ad group | Audience, placement, optimisation event, bid strategy, schedule | Broad targeting with age and location limits, optimised for the event closest to the sale |
| Ad | Video, caption, call to action, landing page, identity | Four to eight ads per ad group, each with a different hook |
Objectives fall into three broad groups: awareness (reach), consideration (traffic, video views, community interaction, app promotion, lead generation) and conversion (website conversions and product sales). For most of our clients, we optimise for purchases or qualified leads as soon as the pixel has enough data. Optimising for cheap clicks on TikTok tends to bring people who love to click and rarely buy.
TikTok also offers automated campaign types, such as its Smart+ campaigns, that take over more of the targeting and creative rotation. They can work well for e-commerce once you have strong creative and clean conversion data. We test them against manual campaigns rather than switching everything over at once.

03TikTok ad formats and when to use each
There are more formats than most brands need. These are the ones we use regularly.
- In-feed ads. Standard vertical videos that appear in the For You feed. The workhorse for most campaigns.
- Spark Ads. Paid boosts of real organic posts from your account or from creators who give you permission. Likes, comments and follows stay with the original post, which adds social proof. Our TikTok Spark Ads service covers the creator permissions and setup.
- Carousel and image ads. Useful for catalogues and when video production is limited, though they rarely outperform good video.
- Lead generation ads. Instant forms inside TikTok that capture details without sending people to a website. They work well for services, and we cover them in depth on our TikTok lead generation page.
- Shopping and catalogue ads. For stores with a product feed, these show products dynamically. See our TikTok ads for e-commerce service for how we structure them.
Premium placements such as TopView and branded hashtag challenges exist, but they are usually bought through a TikTok sales representative with large minimum spends. For most brands, in-feed and Spark Ads carry the account.

04Creative that works on TikTok
If there is one section of this guide to read twice, it is this one. On the accounts we manage, the difference between a TikTok campaign that works and one that fails is almost always the creative, not the targeting or the bid.
The first two seconds
Open with the most interesting thing you have. A result, a surprising statement, a problem the viewer recognises, a face talking straight to camera. Logos, slow product reveals and brand intros in the first seconds are the fastest way to lose the viewer.
Native look and feel
Shoot vertically, use real people, keep text inside the safe zones so captions and buttons do not cover it, and design for sound on. Trending sounds from the commercial music library help, but a clear voiceover explaining the product usually matters more.
Formats that tend to perform
- Founder or team member talking to camera about why the product exists.
- Before and after, or problem and solution, shown rather than described.
- Unboxing and first reactions from real customers or creators.
- Answering a real comment or question on video.
- Side-by-side comparisons with the old way of doing something.
We plan creative in batches around hooks: one product benefit, five different opening lines, each tested as a separate ad. When a hook wins, we reshoot variations of it. If you do not have the capacity to make this volume, our video content production team makes TikTok-native content designed for paid use.

05Targeting and budgets
New advertisers often try to recreate their detailed Meta interest targeting on TikTok. In our experience that rarely helps. The algorithm finds buyers mostly by watching who engages with the creative, so narrow targeting often just makes results more expensive.
Our default setup for a new account:
- Broad audience within the right country and age range.
- Custom audiences for retargeting video viewers, site visitors and engaged users once there is enough volume.
- Exclusions for recent purchasers so you are not paying to reach people who just bought.
- Interest or hashtag targeting only as a test against broad, not as the default.
On budget, TikTok needs enough spend per ad group to exit its learning phase, which means reaching a steady number of optimisation events each week. Spreading a small budget across many ad groups keeps every one of them stuck in learning. We would rather run one or two well-funded ad groups than six starved ones.

06Tracking TikTok ads properly
TikTok’s reporting relies on its pixel and, increasingly, on server-side data sent through its Events API. Browser tracking alone misses a growing share of conversions because of ad blockers, privacy settings and in-app browsers. Setting up both gives the algorithm better data to optimise on.
Before any campaign goes live, we check that purchase or lead events fire once, with the right value and currency, and that duplicate events between pixel and server are handled. It is the same discipline we apply in any conversion tracking setup, and it saves weeks of optimising on bad data.
Even with good tracking, TikTok often looks weaker on last-click reports than it really is, because many people see a TikTok ad and later buy through search or a direct visit. We judge it on blended new customer numbers and, where budgets allow, on holdout tests. For brands with complex paths to purchase, attribution modelling helps show TikTok’s real contribution.

07TikTok ads vs Meta and Snapchat
Clients often ask whether TikTok should replace some of their Meta budget. Usually the answer is that it should sit next to it, with a separate creative approach.
| TikTok | Meta (Facebook and Instagram) | Snapchat | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creative style | Raw, native, creator led | Wider range, from UGC to polished | Very native, quick, playful |
| Audience skew | Younger, broadening fast | Broadest age range | Younger, strong in some regions such as the Gulf |
| Creative refresh | Very frequent | Frequent | Frequent |
| Where it fits | Demand creation and discovery | Core prospecting and retargeting | Demand creation for specific audiences |
For most brands we manage, Meta advertising remains the core paid social channel, with TikTok as the second. Where the audience is concentrated in markets like the UAE or Saudi Arabia, Snapchat story ads can deserve a test alongside it. See our media planning guide for how we decide the mix.
08Common TikTok ads mistakes
- Running TV ads on TikTok. Horizontal, polished brand films get skipped. Reshoot for the platform.
- Too few creatives. Two or three ads fatigue within days at any meaningful spend.
- Optimising for clicks. Cheap traffic is easy to buy on TikTok and rarely converts.
- Judging it in the first week. The learning phase makes early days noisy. Give a test three to four weeks with a clear pass mark.
- Sending traffic to a slow desktop page. Nearly all TikTok traffic is mobile and impatient. Fast, focused landing pages make a visible difference.
Get those right and TikTok becomes a steady source of new customers rather than a gamble. For a wider look at running paid media across platforms, the full TikTok advertising service page and the oldemergingads.com homepage explain how we plan, buy and report across channels.
